Masterpiece

The world's great art, on your wallpaper.

Your lock screen becomes a different painting — Vermeer's quiet light, Van Gogh's cypresses, Hokusai's wave — drawn from the open collections of the world's great museums. Tap into the app and you'll find the story behind the work: who painted it, when, and why it matters.

How it works

  1. Install Masterpiece. The app curates a small private album of seven museum-quality wallpapers, cropped for your screen.
  2. Point iOS Photo Shuffle at it. A one-time, two-minute setup — the app walks you through every tap. Shuffle daily or hourly, your choice.
  3. Live with art. iOS rotates your wallpaper through the current works; Masterpiece hangs a fresh exhibition about once a week.

One exhibition, shared by everyone

Every Masterpiece user sees the same works at the same time — like the day's Wordle, it's one exhibition for all of us. Every work is in the public domain, sourced from the open-access programs of the world's great museums, reproduced in full fidelity and credited to its museum.
